Govt. sets up Competition Law Review Committee

The Government has set up a 9 member Competition Law Review Committee comprising Secretary, MCA, Chairperson of CCI and IBBI, Haigreve Khaitan from Khaitan & Co, and 6 others to review the Competition Act ensuring that the Legislation is in sync with the changing business environment.

The Act was passed in 2002 and CCI was set up in 2009. However, since its inception, the size of the economy has grown immensely making it one of the fifth largest economies in the World.

Hence, it is essential that Competition Law is strengthened, and re-calibrated to promote best practices which result in the citizens of this country achieving their aspirations and value for money.

The Committee will:

  • Review the Competition Act/ Rules/ Regulations;
  • Look into international best practices in anti-trust laws, merger guidelines etc;
  • Handle cross border competition issues;
  • Study other regulatory regimes/ institutional mechanisms/ govt. policies which overlap with the Act;

It shall complete its work and submit report within three months of the date of its first meeting.
